Thrust Areas

The Chemical Imaging Initiative sponsors thrust areas to develop new capabilities:

Thrust Area 1: Nanoscale Molecular Imaging. This thrust area focuses on developing light-source-based x-ray and vacuum ultraviolet probes, coupled with laboratory-based imaging capabilities, for 3D tomographic, structural, and element-specific interrogation at the molecular level. Light-source x-ray tomography, soft x-ray scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, and hard inelastic x-ray scattering, and hard inelastic x-ray scattering, coupled with laboratory-based fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution secondary ion MS (nano SIMS), single-particle laser ablation mass spectrometry (SPLAT), and high-resolution electron microscopy will be used to image biological and environmental samples and energy materials. Light-source capabilities play a major role in Thrust Area 1.

Thrust Area 2: Near Nanometer In-House Imaging. This thrust area focuses on developing coupled optical, electron, ion, mass, and scanning probe microscopies (SPM) to understand chemical and biological transformations and mechanisms. In-situ electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, SPM, high-resolution vibrational spectroscopy, such as tip-enhanced infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and atom probe tomography are either coupled together or coupled with light-source capabilities to image biological and environmental samples and energy materials. Laboratory-based capabilities play a major role in Thrust Area 2.

Thrust Area 3: Multimodal Analysis and Integration Framework for Chemical Imaging. This thrust area focuses on developing a flexible, multimodal analysis and integration framework that will allow the capture, formalization, and utilization of expert knowledge to facilitate user-driven analysis and integrations across the spectrum of chemical imaging technologies. The framework will enable the community to contribute their own tools and support their effort by providing key technologies for data annotation, compression, reduction, reconstruction, registration, and segmentation. In addition, capabilities for feature detection and distributed analysis and integration across different sites and imaging technologies will be created.
